Jo Derrick (Scotland, UK)

I have 15 years of experience working within a fostering agency in Scotland. I started in the placements service where I managed the team that took referrals for children/young people that the Local Authority required a foster placement for. Since then I have progressed within the agency in leadership roles and am the current Managing Director and Registered Manager with regulatory responsibility for the service.

In 2011 I became a registered foster carer with my local authority. During this time I have worked with a number of families providing respite for Looked After children to support their placement with foster carers. I have also provided ‘edge of care’ support where the children have returned to the care of the parent/s or where they have been at risk of being accommodated if early interventions were not implemented.  I am passionate about the work that I do in both areas of my life.

I fully support the vision, mission and values that inform the work of IFCO and would ensure these underpinned my leadership practice in a Board Director capacity.

I am an executive committee member for Social Work Scotland, sit on the Children and Families standing committee and vice chair of the Corporate Parenting sub- group, and therefore bring experience and skill in working within a diverse group of people working towards a common goal.

As a Managing Director for my organisation I now have more than 4 years of experience of reporting to Board and demonstrating and supporting good governance of the agency, and am confident I can undertake the duties required of a Board Director.

In particular I understand the need to ensure the organisation delivers on its long-term vision, mission, goals and objectives. To achieve this Directors must give firm strategic and policy direction to the organisation, define goals, set targets and evaluate performance against agreed indicators. This resonates with me as these are skills I have developed in my role and as a Managing Director I am responsible for both the strategic and operational direction of my agency, achieving our goals and evaluating performance against the agency objectives.

My post-graduate qualification, Masters in Business Administration with a Specialism in Leadership Studies (due for completion next year), has given me evidence based learning to enhance my leadership practice. My organisation is part of a global group of companies and I have had the good fortune to engage with colleagues from agencies across the world all committed in their belief that every child has the right to achieve their full potential. I’d like to bring this experience to IFCO supporting the mission to share global experience to achieve excellence in alternative care.
