HAITI: all of the 33 "orphans" to be reunited with their parents

The 33 children who were to be taken to the Dominican Republic by ten
US citizens will be reunited with their biological families on 17 March.

The children arrived on 30 January, when SOS Children's Villages was
assigned the task of taking care of them temporarily by the Haitian
child welfare authority IBERS following the arrest of a group of ten US nationals who had tried to take them out of the country under dubious circumstances
and without proper documentation.

Following a lengthy processof family verification handled by IBERS, the children, aged four months to twelve years, can now return home. It has turned out that all of the 33 children have parents.

UK > Gordon Brown apologises to child migrants sent abroad

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has apologised for the
UK's role in sending more than 130,000 children to former colonies
where many suffered abuse.

He expressed regret for the "misguided" Child Migrant Programme, telling Parliament he was "truly sorry".

He also announced a £6m fund to reunite families that were torn apart.

The scheme sent poor children for a "better life" to countries like Canada
and Australia from the 1920s to 1960s, but many were abused & lied to.

Mr Brown said: "To all those former child migrants and their families... we are truly sorry. They were let down.

"We are sorry they were allowed to be sent away at the time when they were
most vulnerable. We are sorry that instead of caring for them, this
country turned its back.  (+ more > click link below)

Haiti’s Children and the Adoption Question - New York Times

IFCO has been inundated with emails and phone calls on this topic.  On 16 January we published the "Guiding Principles" (see below) which were originally produced post-tsunami & represented the views of IFCO and the following agencies: the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the International Rescue Committee (IRC), Save the Children UK (SCUK), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR),and World Vision International (WVI).

Our answers to all the well-meaning people who have contacted us have been consistent with these Guiding Principles and also the Guidelines for the Alternative Care of Children which were welcomed by the United Nations in November 2009.

Following the recent arrest of 10 American citizens in Haiti the New York Times has published an interesting online piece with a range of opinions & comments:
