IFCO 2017 Conference is just one day away: last minute helpful info and tips
IFCO 2017 - Programme

We are pleased to announce that 20th biennial IFCO 2017 World Conference, which will take place from 1st to 4th November 2017 in Valletta, Malta, has been completely sold out. Over 300 delegates from 42 countries of the world will attend 10 plenary and workshop sessions and more than 65 interactive presentations and workshops.

The final Conference Programme has been published and is available to view online or download here. You can also browse conference programme and plan your personal schedule ahead on your mobile devices through the all-new IFCO 2017 Conference app.

IFCO 2017 World Conference will be attended by Her Excellency Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, President of Malta where she will deliver the opening address on the first two days of the conference.  Other confirmed guests will include Dr Michael Falzon, Minister For Family, Children’s Rights And Social Solidarity, Government Of Malta.

“Setting Sail from a Safe Port: Giving our children confidence to move forward with safe and permanent relationships” is the theme of the conference implying that only stable and definitive solutions are in best interest of children in out-of-home care systems. Discussions will be focused around the themes of the reforms in child protection systems and deinstitutionalisation (DI), prevention, intervention, early childhood and permanency, partnership, engagement and children and youth participation, as well as formal and informal educational outcomes for children during care and for careleavers and measuring success. In addition to the adult's conference programme, the conference will also feature programme specifically tailored for youths and care-leavers, and another that targets the needs of children.

The conference is organised in partnership with National Foster Care Association Malta (NFCAM), the President's Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society (PFWS)Eurochild and the Foundation for Social Welfare Services - Aġenzija Appoġġ.

Other helpful information to all those attending IFCO 2017:

● Travel and Arrivals
Venue
The conference is being hosted in Grandmaster's Palace, Republic Street, Valletta, Island of Malta VLT 1191, Malta. Its in the centre of the capital city, Valletta and is very accessible on a Main Street.
Airport Arrival
If you are arriving from the airport, there is a 24 hour taxi service that you can pre-pay once you arrive to the airport and they will bring you anywhere in Malta. Depending on the distance and the time of day, the price changes but on average, you can get to Valletta or Gzira or Sliema for €20-25 in total and will take 20-45 minutes.
Taxis/Mini-buses
Taxis can be picked at the airport and there isn’t usually a wait. Most hotels can also recommend mini-buses or taxis they use. We recommend Salina Cab Service (info@salinacabservice.com, +35679112233) – they can be pre-booked in advance, can manage larger groups with mini-buses and are accessible for people with limited abilities or wheelchairs. Another recommended taxi service is E-Cabs +35621383838

● Registration
Registration for all 4-day conference attendees is on Wednesday, November 1st in the Grandmaster's Palace, Republic Street, Valletta, Island of Malta VLT 1191, Malta from 15:00 until 17:30. There is a separate registration for adults, children, youth, and presenters. The exhibition stands will also be set up on this day and we will be collecting items donated to the Silent Auction. Each morning, the registration desk (for adults) will be open in the Grandmaster Palace from 08.15 to 08.50. The first plenary is at 09.00. (Please see seperate section with information for children and youth daily registration on the second page of this letter)

● Dress code
While IFCO is a conference, it is a friendly environment and business-casual clothing is appropriate. Please note that because we will be in a Palace and the President will be present a number of times, so it is not suitable to wear sleevless tops or shorts. Similarly, the IFCO Gala Dinner is a welcoming environment. You can “come as you are”, or you can dress up to feel good, and/or wear some national dress if you have brought it!

● Silent Auction
At every conference, IFCO runs a Silent Auction, which is when conference attendees bring national, cultural or unique items from their countries and donate them to IFCO. These are then displayed and auctioned off where all profits go directly to the IFCO Pat Whelan Fund, a dedicated fund for careleavers to be able to attend IFCO conferences. Items can be handed in at registration or during lunch on Thursday (please see your conference book for more information). We invite you to please donate something that represents you or your country. 100% of donations goes to the IFCO Pat Whelan Fund. This year, 5 youth in care and careleavers were part- or fully-funded to attend IFCO2017!

● Electricity in Malta
In Malta the power sockets are of type G. The standard voltage is 230 V and the standard frequency is 50 Hz. This socket only works with plug G (3 pin plugs). Please visit https://www.power-plugs-sockets.com/malta/ for more details.

We are wishing safe travels to all our delegates travelling to Malta!
