Care in a family environment
At IFCO, we believe in keeping families together. But sometimes, this isn’t possible. Sometimes you have to be taken away from your family and placed with a foster family.
Around the world, IFCO volunteers work to ensure that foster care is focused on you and what you need. We want every child in the world to have a family and to be able to grow up in a home where they feel safe and loved.
Your right to family-based care
All the work we do at IFCO is based on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). Taking place in 1989, this meeting saw the formulation of a set of laws to protect children all over the world.
The UNCRC says that every child in the world has the right to grow up in a family. When you can’t live with your own family, you have the right to live with another family who can give you a home and look after you and respect you for who you are.
IFCO works to make this happen by making sure people everywhere are aware of how important family-based foster care is. We talk to foster care providers and governments and train people up to make sure they are giving the best possible foster care. We also hold conferences for children, foster carers and foster care workers from around the world so that people can talk and share information.
Have your say on family care The UNCRC also has a law that says that every child deserves to be listened to. At IFCO we understand that you are the ones to experience foster care and know what’s good about it and what’s not. That’s why what you have to say matters to us.
